Workshop 6 : Blending University Teaching and University Research for Environmental Sustainability
Demonstrates the teaching–research nexus as a driver of environmental sustainability and academic excellence. Covers foundational concepts, practical strategies for embedding research-based learning (inquiry, case-based design, mini-projects, literature reviews), assessment aligned to research skills, and the enabling role of technology and open resources. Concludes with institutional enablers (promotion criteria, time management, recognition) and an action- planning segment for participants.

Professor Hussein A. Kazem is a distinguished scholar with a PhD from Newcastle University (UK).
With over 25 years of academic and research experience, he serves as Professor at Sohar University and UNESCO RCQE Chair in Emerging Renewable & Sustainable Energy Technologies, while also holding visiting professorships at UKM, UNITEN (Malaysia), and Newcastle University (UK).
He has authored over 280 publications, eight books, and nine chapters, and is ranked among the world’s top 2% of scientists by Stanford University and Elsevier for seven consecutive years, with a Scopus h-index of 61.
Recipient of numerous international awards and two patents, he has supervised over 80 students and led ten research grants in photovoltaics, PV/T systems, renewable energy, and power electronics.
He also serves as Associate Editor of *Solar Energy*.

Recipient of numerous awards, including the L’Oréal–UNESCO Pan-Arab Regional Fellowship and Award, LEWAS, and VIWA (2016 & 2021).
She has published and reviewed scientific papers and book chapters in high-ranked journals and contributed as co-author and reviewer for major global and regional reports on environmental sustainability and waste management.
Dr. Sumaya is an active speaker and committee member in international conferences, and a consultant and leader on regional environmental projects.
She contributes extensively to community service and serves as head and member of multiple committees at AGU.
